Good morning
First of all, let us give thanks to God for his mercy and blessings so that we can be collected now in this sunny day and good condition.
Thanks for giving me this chance so that I could deliver this speech. In this opportunity, I am Hermes Garpe, from SMA N 2 Kota Bengkulu. I want to talk about the pictures of the law in Indonesia. I want to explain this speech into three parts.
Ladies and gentlemen,
First, I’d like to explain the definition of law.
Indonesia is a democracy country, and also based on law country. As a democracy country, Indonesia guarantee right of every single citizen, it includes right to live, right to eat, right to get education, right to express opinion, right to choose and to be chosen, etc. Principle of rights is absolute as long as it doesn’t disturb the other people’s right. Law in Indonesia is functioning to describe the fundamental nature of something, and to regulate universal properties and relationship between things. Could you imagine if there’s no law? If there’s no law, someone could kill anyone else, someone could steal your things, and someone could ride a motorcycle without helmet which is really dangerous for him/her. Law is exist to regulate our life and to regulate relationship between people to people, or people to things.
Ladies and gentlemen,
Second, I’d like to explain about democracy.
Indonesia have implemented democracy since 1998, democracy itself means freedom, freedom to express, freedom to speak, freedom to give opinion and etc. Country guarantee right of every single citizen, but as I told you before, right of every single person is absolute as long as it doesn’t disturb the other people’s right. Right of everyone is limited by the other people’s right. You have a right to kill someone but this right couldn’t be taken because it’s limited by people’s right to live.
Ladies and gentlemen,
At last, I’ like to explain about how the implementation of the law now.
Democracy is running quite well in Indonesia, but there’s still room for improvement, we know one case in Jakarta. A man was criticizing a policy of the school, and because of that, his son was expelled. Another case is about a demonstration in one of university in Jakarta, the student was criticizing the policy of one lecturer and in the end of semester his grade with that teacher was bad (in fact he’s one of smart student in the class). Same case happening in law implementation in Indonesia, law is really helping government to regulate life in the country, but there are many things that we still need to improve. Law in Indonesia is only effective for small cases, example: a case of an old woman stole coconut in the yard, and she was punished a year of imprisonment. Compared to a corruption case in Bandung, the corruptor has corrupted country money for more than 100 million and was punished for a year imprisonment. Is it a fair? Sure NO.
And we see there are many suspects of corruption cases and in the court they were verdict free. And if they were imprisoned, they had good facility in their nail. Case of Aryati Suryani is the example, she was jailed in a hotel room, there’s TV, AC, own bathroom, and another good facilities. The same case happen in Gayus’s case, he could go to Bali and watch tennis, how come a prisoner could watch the tennis match and have a vacation in Bali? We need a law which will be fair for every single citizen, we need a law which will give a strong deterrent effect to every criminal.
That is enough for today.
I apologize if there are errors in pronunciation.
Thank you for your attention.
Good day.
